SCHOOL GYM TEAM FIFTH IN THE COUNTRY

WANBOROUGH Primary School's brilliant young gymnasts have been in sparkling form recently.

Their team of six girls ‘Charlotte Robson 9, Victoria Sutton 8, Beth Birmingham 11, Alice Rendell 9 and 10-year-old twins Grace and Emily Upshall‘ were triumphant in the South-West regional finals of the National Schools Team Gymnastics competition held in Taunton.

The under-11 girls championship consisted of individual floor routines, individual vaults and a group floor routine. All the scores were totalled together to give an overall team score with Wanborough coming out on top. As a result of this success, the Wanborough girls progressed to the National Primary Schools Team Gymnastics finals in Stoke-on-Trent to represent the South-West region.

The village school just outside Swindon did extremely well, competing against the cream of the country. In a field of 10 regional winners that contained many of the top young gymnasts in the country and several on scholarships, Wanborough took a highly creditable fifth spot overall.

Their highest placing was in the vault where they came third, while they were fourth in the group floor routine and seventh in the individual floor routine. The team were coached by Katy Smith, the headmaster's daughter, and all of the girls are either members of the Esprit Academy or Swindon School of Gymnastics.
